Setting up a Twitter account

To follow EDCStatus on Twitter (and get email updates, or text message updates on your mobile phone):

  1. You will need to create a Twitter account if you don’t already have one.
  2. Go to http://www.twitter.com and click on the ‘Get Started –Join’ button.

  3. Create your account. You should use a non-EDC email address. If you don’t have one, you can sign up for a Gmail account at http://mail.google.com. You should create the email account before signing up for a Twitter account.

  4. On the next two screens you can ‘skip this step’ if you don’t want to have twitter look for your friends on via Gmail or sign you up to follow their suggested users.

  5. Congratulations. You now have a Twitter account

To have SMS text messages sent to your phone, you need to add the number to your twitter account.

  1. Click on Settings on the upper right and then Devices. Add your mobile number.

  2. Click save. Will get prompted to send an SMS message from your phone to 40404. N.b. your code will be different.

  3. You will get a response back from Twitter, with the following message: Twitter has verified your device and SMS alerts are enabled. Std msg charges apply. Send ‘off’ to silence or ‘stop’ to quit. Send ‘help’ for more.

If you are only using Twitter to follow EDCStatus, you can stop here. If you are following other Twitter accounts and you only want to receive SMS messages for EDCStatus, but not other Twitter accounts:

  1. Go to Devices and turn off notifications.
  2. Send an SMS message to 40404 with ‘on edcstatus’
  3. You will receive the following message: You’ll receive a message every time edcstatus updates. To silence, send ‘off edcstatus’. For more commands, send ‘help’.
  4. You can do this for each Twitter account you are following for which you want to receive SMS updates.
